EXTRACTIONS

  • For 48 hours, avoid intense rinsing, spitting, sucking through a straw, or most importantly, smoking. It is ok, however, to gently rinse with warm salt water with the syringe provided to soothe your gums.
  • Apply an ice pack to reduce any swelling.
  • Take your medication as prescribed. If given an antibiotic, take until it is completely finished.
  • Relieve any bleeding by placing a rolled piece of the gauze provided against the area for 30 minutes.

You may experience some bleeding and discomfort over the next few days, but you may call our office if these persist.

COMPOSITE FILLINGS

  • If an anesthetic is used, you will experience numbness in the tongue, lip, and/or cheek that can last for the next several hours. Be careful not to eat anything until you regain the feeling in these tissues to avoid trauma to the area.
  • If a child receives an anesthetic, monitor him for the next few hours to make sure that he isn’t biting his lip or tongue and avoid giving him food until the numbness is gone.
  • If an amalgam (silver) filling is placed, do not eat anything sticky for the next few hours to avoid dislodging the filling. If a composite (white) filling is placed, you may eat immediately after the numbness vanishes.

ROOT CANAL THERAPY

  • If a temporary restoration is placed after the root canal, it is important to remember that a permanent buildup and in most cases a crown should be placed. Waiting too long after the root canal to have this completed can lead to leakage of bacteria in the root canal treated tooth and possibly a tooth fracture.

COMPLETE OR PARTIAL DENTURES

  • Once the wax try-in is completed, the dentures will only be able to have minor adjustments.
  • It is important to remember to leave the dentures out at night to let your mouth rest. Remove the dentures after each meal to rinse and clean the surfaces. Don’t use toothpastes or harsh abrasives to clean the dentures. Mild soap and a denture brush should be used.
  • If your partial denture has metal clasps, be sure not to bite the dentures in place or remove the denture by the metal clasp to avoid excessive bending of the metal. Instead, carefully push it in place and when removing, grab by the base.

NITROUS OXIDE

  • Someone must accompany you to your visit to drive you home after administration of nitrous oxide.
  • If under 18, a parent or guardian must be present during the entire appointment. Please do not give your child a large meal right before his appointment to avoid nausea/vomiting.
  • Please inform our office if you are pregnant before your appointment.
  • Potential short-term side effects of nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation include:
  • Tingling in fingers, toes, cheeks, lips, tongue, head, or neck area
  • Heaviness in thighs or legs, followed by a lighter floating feeling
  • Resonation in the voice or presence of hyper-nasal tone
  • Uncontrollable laughter or giddiness
  • Sluggish in motion
  • Slurring or repetition of words
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Agitation
  • Hallucination
